Tekka Centre

Little India's hawker centre and wet market on Buffalo Road

Tekka Centre is a hawker centre and wet market at 665 Buffalo Road in Little India, about 150 metres from Little India MRT station. The name comes from the old Kandang Kerbau Market, built across the road in 1915 in an area the Hokkien called tek kia kha, the foot of the small bamboos, after the bamboo that grew along the Rochor Canal. Stallholders moved into the present residential and market complex on 3 May 1981. In November 1981, during the Speak Mandarin Campaign, it was renamed Zhujiao Centre, and after residents said the Mandarin name did not reflect the district's heritage it became Tekka Centre in 2000.

The National Environment Agency lists 284 market stalls and 119 cooked food stalls and describes Tekka as the second largest hawker centre in Singapore, popular with the Indian community. The Singapore Tourism Board calls it the largest indoor wet market in Singapore, with fresh produce, spices and dried goods on sale. Many stallholders are second or third generation hawkers whose families traded in the old market. The centre closes for cleaning on 30 November and 1 December 2026. The Indian Heritage Centre on Campbell Lane is a few minutes' walk away.
