Newton Food Centre
Open-air hawker centre at Newton Circus, opened in 1971
Newton Food Centre is an open-air hawker centre at 500 Clemenceau Avenue North in Newton, about 200 metres from Newton MRT station, known for barbecued seafood, Hokkien mee, popiah, satay and fried carrot cake. Opened in 1971, it was one of the earliest hawker centres in Singapore: the Public Works Department built it for street hawkers who had traded on Koek Road and at the Orchard Road car park known as Gluttons' Square, and the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board promoted it to visitors as a place to sample local food. The old centre closed for upgrading in 2005 and reopened on 1 July 2006.
The rebuilt centre kept its semi-outdoor dining. Its 83 food stalls are set in a horseshoe under pitched roofs that echo the clay tiles of the colonial terrace houses on nearby Monk's Hill Terrace, and shady trees surround the seating. The National Environment Agency notes that it is popular with locals and tourists and very crowded at dinner and supper time. The centre closes for cleaning on 7 and 8 December 2026.
