Tiger Balm brothers' folklore park, home to Hell's Museum

View all 2 photos

Haw Par Villa is an 8.5-hectare Asian cultural park on Pasir Panjang Road in south-west Singapore, formerly known as the Tiger Balm Garden. It was created by Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, the brothers behind Tiger Balm, who bought the hillside land in 1935, and its grounds hold over 1,000 statues and 150 dioramas drawn from Chinese folklore and legend. The government took over the garden in 1985 and ran it as the Haw Par Villa Dragon World theme park from 1990 until it closed in 2001, after which the grounds became a public park again.

Since 8 December 2025 the park has been partly closed for essential maintenance and repair works. The Singapore Tourism Board announced the works on 18 November 2025, timed with the end of operator Journeys Pte Ltd's contract on 7 December 2025, and said it is reviewing future plans for the park with stakeholders; no reopening date has been given. Hell's Museum remains open throughout. Managed by Haw Par Villa Pte Ltd, it looks at how religions and philosophies see death and the afterlife and houses the Ten Courts of Hell, the garden's best-known set of dioramas. Haw Par Villa MRT station (CC25) on the Circle Line is about a minute's walk from the entrance.
