Sacred high-altitude lakes revered across far western Nepal
Ramaroshan is a complex of sacred lakes and a protected area in Achham District, situated at around 3,000 metres on a forested plateau in the far western hills. The lakes are revered as holy sites by the Hindu communities of the region and the area is also an important habitat for wildlife and medicinal plants.The Ramaroshan Protected Area preserves a unique high-altitude ecosystem and the pilgrimage to the sacred lakes is a deeply embedded tradition for the people of Achham and neighboring districts, with the lakes believed to possess healing and purifying properties.
