Promenade Beach

Promenade Beach is the seafront walk along White Town in Puducherry, running for about 1.5 km on Goubert Avenue (Beach Road) beside the Bay of Bengal. Promenade Beach is lined with rocks and a sea wall rather than sand, so it is a place to walk and sit by the sea rather than swim, and it is the social heart of the town.

Promenade Beach was the waterfront of French Pondichéry, where ships once anchored offshore and the customs house and government buildings faced the sea. Many of those buildings still stand, alongside memorials to French and Indian history. After the cyclone and coastal erosion of recent decades took away most of the sand, the sea wall was reinforced, and an artificial beach has been partly restored near the old pier. In the evening and early morning the road is closed to traffic, and the whole town comes out to walk, jog and eat snacks by the sea.

What to wear

Puducherry is hot and humid for most of the year, so light cotton clothes, a hat and sunscreen are best, with sandals for the promenade. Swimming is unsafe here, so swimwear is not needed. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees suits the nearby churches and the Aurobindo Ashram. Tamil Nadu's traditional dress, which you will see in Puducherry, is the saree for women and the white veshti for men.

Local food to try

Stalls along Promenade Beach sell roasted corn, sundal, bajji fritters and ice cream in the evening. The streets behind it are full of cafes and bakeries serving croissants, baguettes and crepes, a legacy of French rule. Puducherry also has its own Franco-Tamil, or Creole, cooking, with dishes such as prawn curry with coconut, and many seafood restaurants face the water. Tamil vegetarian meals and filter coffee are easy to find in the Tamil quarter.

Nearby places

Promenade Beach is the edge of the French Quarter (White Town), whose streets run just behind it. The experimental township of Auroville is about 10 km north, and Chennai's Marina Beach is around three and a half hours up the coast.
