Hall of Fame, Leh
The Hall of Fame is the Indian Army's war memorial and museum near Leh, telling the story of soldiers in Ladakh's mountains.
The Hall of Fame is a war memorial and museum built and run by the Indian Army, about 4 km from Leh on the road to Kargil in Ladakh. The Hall of Fame honours the soldiers who died defending the region, and tells the story of the wars and mountain operations fought in Ladakh, including the 1999 Kargil conflict and the Siachen Glacier.
The museum gives useful context to the army presence you see across Ladakh, from checkposts to convoys on the passes. Its galleries hold weapons, uniforms, photographs and the specialist clothing and equipment used by troops posted above 5,000 metres, where frostbite and thin air are as dangerous as any enemy. Other rooms cover Ladakh's history, culture, dress and wildlife, which makes the Hall of Fame a good introduction to the region on an easy acclimatisation day. Outside, a memorial lists the names of soldiers who died in the Kargil conflict, and captured weapons and army vehicles stand in the grounds.
What to see
- The Operation Vijay gallery on the 1999 Kargil conflict
- The Siachen gallery with high-altitude clothing and gear
- Captured weapons and army vehicles in the grounds
- The war memorial wall with the names of the fallen
- Displays on Ladakhi culture, dress and wildlife
What to wear
There is no formal dress code, but this is a memorial, so modest clothing and quiet behaviour are expected. At 3,500 metres Leh is sunny by day and cool in the evening, so bring a hat, sunglasses and a jacket, especially later in the day. The galleries include Ladakh's traditional dress, such as the goncha, the long woollen robe tied with a sash, and the turquoise perak headdress worn by women.
Local food to try
There is a small cafe and souvenir shop on site for tea and snacks. For a proper meal, head back to Leh's Main Bazaar or Changspa Road for thukpa noodle soup, skyu (a hearty stew of thumb-pressed wheat pasta and vegetables), momos, khambir flatbread with apricot jam, and salty butter tea. Leh has many vegetarian options, and halal food is available near the Jama Masjid in the bazaar.
