Folk Heritage Museum

The Folk Heritage Museum, known in Dzongkha as Phelchey Toenkhyim, occupies a rammed earth and timber farmhouse in the Kawajangsa area of Thimphu that is more than 150 years old. It was opened on 28 July 2001 by Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck.

The house is furnished as a rural household of the 19th century would have been, floor by floor: animals below, living quarters above, and the altar room at the top. Tools, storage vessels and farming implements sit in the rooms they were used in rather than behind glass, which is what makes the visit read as a house somebody left rather than a display about one.
