Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

A relatively modern, richly painted chorten built for the wellbeing of the kingdom, reached via a walk through rice fields and a short climb.

The chorten was commissioned by Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon and took nine years to build, finished in 2004, so it is modern by Bhutanese standards and its paintings are correspondingly crisp. Four floors climb to a roof terrace looking up and down the Mo Chhu. Reaching it means crossing the river on a suspension footbridge and then a climb of thirty to forty five minutes through paddy, which is hot work in the afternoon. It is about half an hour upstream from Punakha Dzong.
