Dungtse Lhakhang

Dungtse Lhakhang, also written Jangtsa Dumtseg, was founded in Paro by Thangtong Gyalpo, the Tibetan lama and engineer remembered across the Himalaya as the Iron Bridge Builder. Sources give the year as either 1421 or 1433. The same man threw the iron chain bridge at Tamchog Lhakhang further down the same valley.

The temple is built in the form of a chorten, which is rare in Bhutan, and was raised in that shape to pin down the forces of the place. Its three floors stand for hell, earth and heaven, and the murals inside are considered among the finest in the country. It is usually locked, so entry depends on the caretaker being found.
