Phuentsholing Town
Bhutan's bustling southern gateway
Phuentsholing is the border town in Bhutan's south west, pressed directly against Jaigaon in West Bengal, and it is one of only two land crossings open to foreign nationals. The other is at Samdrup Jongkhar, far to the east.
The Bhutan Gate marks the vehicle crossing, with the pedestrian terminal beside it. The two towns run into each other, and the contrast at the line is the thing everyone remarks on. Phuentsholing is Bhutan's commercial and industrial centre, the entry point for almost everything the country imports, and the start of the climb north to Thimphu, about six hours by road.
