Punakha Dzong sits at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (father) and Mo Chhu (mother) rivers, and is widely regarded as the most beautiful of Bhutan's fortress-monasteries. Built in 1637-38 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutan as a unified state, it served as the country's capital and seat of government until the mid-20th century, and remains the winter residence of the Central Monastic Body today.
The dzong is reached by a traditional wooden cantilever bridge over the Mo Chhu, and its whitewashed walls, ornate woodwork and jacaranda trees (in spring bloom) make it one of the most photographed buildings in Bhutan. It is also the traditional venue for royal weddings, including that of Bhutan's current king.
