The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is the Annapurna region's best short introduction to the Himalayas -- a compact, moderate trek that still delivers one of Nepal's most famous panoramas: sunrise over Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) from the ridge at Poon Hill, 3,210 m.

The trail climbs through terraced farmland, Magar and Gurung villages, and dense rhododendron forest -- at its best in spring, when the rhododendrons (Nepal's national flower) are in bloom -- before reaching Ghorepani, the overnight stop below Poon Hill itself. The early sunrise climb is short and steep, rewarded almost immediately by a 360-degree amphitheatre of 7,000-8,000 m peaks.

Unlike the longer treks into the Annapurna Sanctuary, Ghorepani Poon Hill never goes above 3,210 m and spends only one night above 2,500 m -- a real Himalayan trek with a much lower altitude-sickness risk, well suited to a first-time trekker or a shorter Nepal itinerary.

Evening trip briefing

A short, scenic 25-minute flight takes you from Kathmandu to Pokhara, gateway to the Annapurna region. Settle into your lakeside hotel, then spend the afternoon at leisure around Phewa Lake -- boating, exploring the lakeside cafes, or simply resting up before the trek begins.

An early drive from Pokhara to Nayapul (about 1 hour) puts you on the trail by mid-morning. The route follows the Modi Khola river through Birethanti before climbing gently to Tikhedhunga, a small village set above the valley. A gentle first day to settle into trekking rhythm.

Today's the trek's toughest climb: the famous stone staircase from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri, gaining over 500m in a couple of hours. Beyond Ulleri the trail eases into cool rhododendron and oak forest for the rest of the way to Ghorepani, a ridge-top village with your first real Himalayan panorama.

A pre-dawn 45-minute climb brings you to Poon Hill (3,210m) for sunrise over Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Annapurna I and Machhapuchhre -- one of the most rewarded views for the effort in the Himalayas. Return to Ghorepani for breakfast, then trek on through rhododendron forest to Tadapani, perched above the Modi Khola valley.

A long descent through Gurung villages and forest brings you back down to Nayapul, where a private vehicle meets you for the drive to Pokhara. From there, a short flight returns you to Kathmandu in time for a farewell dinner -- or a free evening before your onward journey.

Everything you need to know.

It's graded easy-to-moderate -- the Ulleri staircase on Day 4 is the one genuinely strenuous climb, but the trek never goes above 3,210m and most days are 4-7 hours of walking on well-maintained trails. A reasonable level of fitness is enough; no prior trekking experience is required.

Yes -- Ghorepani and Poon Hill sit directly on the approach to Annapurna Base Camp, and many trekkers add 3 extra days here to continue on to Chhomrong and the Annapurna Sanctuary. Contact us and we'll tailor a combined itinerary.

The risk is much lower than on longer, higher treks -- you only spend one night above 2,500m, and the trek's maximum altitude (3,210m at Poon Hill) is reached on a short morning excursion, not an overnight stay. Your guide still watches everyone for symptoms as standard practice.

March-May for blooming rhododendrons and clear mountain views, and October-November for the most stable weather and sharpest visibility. Both seasons get busy on the trail -- book teahouses and flights in advance.
